As we bask in the glow of CRC@30, it is worth recalling that the historic World Summit for Children in 1990 provided the early momentum for its universal ratification and implementation.
Without the Summit for Children, it would have taken much longer for CRC to get traction. The Summit not only gave political momentum to the CRC at the highest level, but it also helped formulate ambitious, time-bound development goals for children that later served as the foundation for the Millennium Development Goals and today’s SDGs.
Most UNICEF staff and leaders today do not remember or appreciate the monumental importance of the Summit for Children. This interview seeks to remind us all of the links between the CRC and WSC – and Jim Grant’s pivotal role in orchestrating both.
I hope, building on the momentum of CRC@30, UNICEF and others will find an appropriate way to mark the 30th anniversary of WSC in 1990 – and 25th anniversary of Jim Grant’s passing away in 1995.
